This crises has brought into full view the difference between here in the states, and where I grew up in (what was then) West Germany.
I have always felt a creepy malaise about how casual "Americans" are with the banality of evil.
In Germany, someone would come trotting up to you with "My dear Friend! My goodness! You seem to have done a shitty thing! Are you alright?"
To which your response would be "Oh dear! Thanks you ever so much, my fine fellow! I don't know what I was thinking! I must have been distracted by this fine weather we are having! *readjusts scarf against the driving snow blowing down their collar* My goodness, what a lovely hat you are wearing!"
Shopping cart, cigarette butt, fender bender, cutting in line, same, same, same.
(racism, brick to the head, no preamble. applause by lookers-on)
Sigh... I miss it.
